We’ve all heard that red wine has health benefits, a fact many researchers are quick to qualify by listing the far more numerous physical problems caused by alcohol. Now a new study called “Alcohol Intake and Risk of Incident Melanoma” adds to the risk side of the booze equation. Published at the American Association for Cancer Research, the study considered 1,374 cases of invasive melanoma and drew this conclusion: “Alcohol intake was associated with a modest increase in the risk of melanoma, particularly in UV-protected sites.”
Because melanoma risk was seen “particularly in UV-protected sites” the melanoma risk cited by the study was determined to increase regardless of sun exposure, the most common melanoma trigger.
