Box Office numbers — that’s the coin of the realm in Hollywood. The winner is, as James Cameron said with Oscar in hand (echoing Leo DiCaprio) the “King of the World!” But what about the new world — who’s king there? Well the distributor, if you’re talking about streaming.
In an interview with Rue Morgue, director Mike Flanagan (Oculus), whose Hush became an instant horror classic when it was released on Netflix in April, said this: “I view Hush, actually, as my most successful movie. All of Netflix’s numbers are proprietary, so I don’t get to look at them, but the way I’ve heard people talking, it’s been viewed an amazing number of times, and the reception has been very, very positive.” That’s right, Mike Flanagan has no idea how many times his “most successful movie” has been seen. He’s just got a guess, and maybe a greenlight for his new project.
