D.J. Demers is the 30-year-old standup comedian vying for the $1 million prize on America’s Got Talent. Prior to his routine, he told the judges that he has two disabilities, he’s from Canada and he wears hearing aids. He’s been wearing the hearing aids since he was 4, and has been doing comedy since he was 23. Demers went on to deliver a great set, causing comedian Howie Mandel to say, “You’re my favorite comedian so far.” Mel B said, “You gave me more than a belly laugh.” And Simon Cowell said, “We all felt comfortable. You’re original and likeable.”
While Demers doesn’t hide his hearing aids, he also says “I make a conscious effort not to do only hearing aid jokes. That would get old, so quick, for me and the audience.” He said so in an ad for the Swiss hearing aid company Phonak — Demers wears their Naida brand which comes with the Roger Pen. In the video (see below), Demers says wearing hearing aids “definitely gives me a unique point of view that not many other comedians have” similar to last year’s AGT finalist stuttering Drew Lynch. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
