Apple iOS 9.3 includes a Night Shift feature that aims to chill out on the blue light. Sounding like the standalone f.lux software, Night Shift furthers the personalization of the device experience. Since blue light has been shown to be about as good for you before bed as espresso, Apple is giving you a way to reduce it automatically during those hours when it’s likely to cause the most discomfort.
F.lux said in January that it was excited about Apple’s stated decision to commit to fixing the problems associated with “exposure to bright light at the wrong times.” F.lux also mentioned being “proud that we are the original innovators and leaders in this area.” The blue light problem got a lot of attention last year, when research found that blue light hurts sleep quality and that large percentages of Western children “use a tablet or phone within 30 minutes of bedtime.”
