Many Americans watching the final season of Downton Abbey on PBS admire the fashions worn at Downton. So the popular TV show is encouraging fans to make their own knitwear inspired by the show using Downton Abbey Yarn Collection. In addition to skeins of yarn, there are a number of patterns that can be downloaded (for free) including Mrs. Hughes’ Afghan, the Dowager Shawl, and a Crawley vest.
There are four lines of Downton Abbey yarn available in different weights and named after different characters. The Lady Mary is a lightweight acrylic yarn with glitter (great for shawls, scarves, “anything lacey”). The Branson Yarn is named after the chauffeur who falls in love with the Earl’s daughter – it’s a “chunky” everyday acrylic/wool blend that fits both upstairs and downstairs. A skein of Downton Abbey yarn costs $6. Downton Abbey airs Sundays at 9pm on PBS.
