Jimmy Kimmel brought drama to comedy at the Emmy Awards. Or at least his (literally) scene-chewing deliberation prolonged the dramatic tension before he announced the winner for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Kimmel put the card with the winner’s name on it in his mouth and chewed it, while teasing the crowd with information that was on his tongue only. Turns out the winner was Jeffrey Tambor, who gave an eloquent thanks that quickly made Kimmel’s schtick forgettable. But it wasn’t forgettable for Matt LeBlanc.
LeBlanc was also nominated for the Emmy — for his starring role in Episodes. Kimmel implied from the stage that LeBlanc didn’t really have a chance, and when Kimmel got back to his seat LeBlanc showed that he didn’t think much of Kimmel’s judgement — and didn’t want to be fodder for the late night host’s comedy. (In LeBlanc’s defense, he never knocks anybody in his own comedy.) Kimmel posted a snap of the contentious moment (see below). Two things seem clear — though pictures are often deceiving. One, Matt LeBlanc wasn’t playing a stirring transgender role that was guaranteed an Emmy — Jeffrey Tambor did that, so Kimmel was spot on. Second, Matt LeBlanc seems to have very tiny fingers. Oh, and a third thing, too: it doesn’t look like a good idea to f*%k around with LeBlanc. He looks like he might just kick Kimmel’s ass.
