CNN reported an “unnerving sight” with reporter Lucy Pawle believing she’s spotted an ISIS flag in the midst of a gay pride parade in London. A man “quite distinctive from the rest of the crowd — he was dressed in black and white whereas everyone else was brightly colored” grabbed Pawle’s attention for a flag he was carrying that “attempted to mimic” the ISIS flag. She also said the flag was “clearly not Arabic” and might be “gobbledygook.”
Slate and other news outlets took a more careful look at the gobbledygook and drew a far more gay pride parade conclusion. The distinctive man’s flag had crude drawings of sex toys, not bad Arabic calligraphy.
