General Martin Dempsey gave an interview to Frontline for its controversial Obama at War documentary, set to air on PBS. In the interview Dempsey — the outgoing Chariman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff — admits that the American powers that be were surprised when ISIS took Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city. Dempsey confessed that the US was surprised by ISIS even though ISIS had seized Fallujah six months earlier.
Former CIA officer in Iraq John Maguire told Yahoo News: “Where in hell is the CIA? We’ve got a $75 billion intelligence budget. There is no excuse for this.” Most stunning of all was Dempsey’s admission that the US had no contingency plan for a breakdown of Iraqi defense forces that allowed ISIS to penetrate the cities. Obama at War airs Tuesday May 26.
