The bulging eyes, the nearly phosphorescent green skin–you almost expect the newly discovered Caribbean frog to start singing poignantly to Miss Piggy. But this frog’s heart belongs to Diane, not Miss Piggy. In fact it’s called Diane’s bare-hearted glassfrog–glass because you can see through its translucent tummy, bare because you can see its heart. (Just like Kermit, really, who wears his on his sleeve.)
The frog , discovered in Costa Rica and announced by the Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center, is one of 14 varieties of “glassfrogs” known to inhabit Costa Rica. The center reports “This new species is named in honor of the senior author’s mother Janet Diane Kubicki.” But it must have been tempting to call it The Henson.
