Rap mogul Suge Knight has been charged with murder in the hit-and-run death of former associate Terry Carter, and with attempted murder after striking another man with his pickup truck in the same incident in February. Knight has pleaded not guilty and has been held without bail, until today. Los Angeles superior court judge Ronald Coen has set Knight’s bail at $25 million. Upon hearing the amount, Suge Knight collapsed and was taken to a jail hospital. If Knight’s people can come up with $25 million, it has to be “clear that his bail was not feloniously obtained.”
At the hearing, Knight’s lawyer, Matthew Fletcher, said the bail amount is excessive, even for someone accused of murder. Fletcher referenced the late crime mob boss John A. Gotti who was freed on $10 million bail in 1998. Gotti somehow successfully proved that the money wasn’t obtained feloniously.
