The state of Georgia hasn’t executed a woman in 70 years, but it plans to execute Kelly Gissendaner on Wednesday. Gissender is 47. She was convicted in 1997 of conspiring to murder her husband. Gissender didn’t actually kill him–a man with whom she was having an affair stabbed the husband multiple times in the neck–but Gissender helped set it up.
Her last meal request included two Burger King Whoppers with cheese, two large orders of fries, popcorn, cornbread, a salad (with tomatoes, peppers, onions, carrots, cheese, and eggs) and Paul Newman buttermilk dressing, according to CBS46 in Georgia. She also requested ice cream and lemonade. There have been 8 executions in the US so far this year. Women represent just 1.08% of the 1,389 executions performed in the United States since 1976.
