Brittany Maynard is the 29-year-old woman who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and has scheduled her own death. She and her husband moved from northern California to bordering Oregon as the latter is one of the five states which allow people to “avail themselves of a law granting persons the right to die.” The other states are Montana, New Mexico, Vermont, and Washington.
Maynard will celebrate her husband’s birthday on October 31, and then with doctor-assisted euthanasia she will die on November 1 at home, in her bed, surrounded by her family. She is spending her last days on this earth traveling with family, and fundraising and lobbying for an organization dedicated to expanding the legality of assisted suicide to other States. Of course, not everyone agrees with her decision, but in Oregon, the legal decision is hers.
