Robin Thicke was smashed in the studio when the made Blurred Lines, the controversial “kind of rapey” smash hit song of summer 2013. He was “high on Vicodin and alcohol” and couldn’t participate as much as he wanted, according to testimony he gave in Los Angeles in April as a result of a lawsuit filed by Marvin Gaye’s children. (Gaye’s family claims Blurred Lines was plagiarized from the Marvin Gaye classic Got to Give It Up.)
Thicke told a story earlier about how Blurred Lines was inspired by the Gaye song, but not lifted. Now Thicke has cleverly opened a different door, saying in essence that the song may have been stolen from Marvin Gaye–who knows? But if it was, he, Thicke, is innocent because he didn’t actually write the song he gets a co-credit for writing. He was just tired of not getting credit so he wormed his way in on this one and claimed he co-wrote it when really he didn’t. Thicke indeed stole credit for making Blurred Lines, he says, but from Pharrell Williams. Pharrell Williams should really be credited with all of it, according to Thicke. Thicke was so drugged up and drunk, he claims, that really how much could he have contributed? (A testimony that, taken to its logical extremes, may mean that no Rolling Stones songs actually exist.)
