It’s been 16 years since Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan starred in You’ve Got Mail. Now they’re working together again on a new film, Ithaca. Based on the 1943 William Saroyan novel The Human Comedy, Ithaca is the coming of age story of 14-year-old Homer Macauley (Alex Neustaedter) who aspires to be the best bicycle telegraph messenger of them all during the summer of 1942. His older brother (Jack Quaid, son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid) has gone to war, leaving Homer to look after his widowed mother (Meg Ryan).
Tom Hanks is the executive producer of the $5 million film, Meg Ryan is making her directorial debut. “‘Ithaca’ is a deceptively simple story, by turns stark and lyrical,” Ryan said in a statement. “It’s sometimes shockingly unsentimental and yet, by some little miracle, never cynical. I am delighted to no end to bring a tale of such vibrancy and heart to the screen.” Ithaca will be released in December 2015. Note: Ithaca is the young lead Alex Neustaedter’s first feature film. He is 16-years-old, born the year You’ve Got Mail came out in 1998.
