Guardians of the Galaxy blitzed movie theaters on opening weekend, doing the kind of boffo box office that gives directors massive independence and credibility as they go forward. Guardians director James Gunn was already in that position, but the success of Guardians puts him in the stratosphere. So what’s he want to do next? Thunderbolts–a group of Marvel characters who bond together not unlike the Guardians of the Galaxy. Though Thunderbolts are more villains than heroes.
Will he get to do it? In an interview with ScreenRant Gunn said he told Marvel chief Keven Feige: “You know, I really want to make Thunderbolts.” To which Feige, who holds the greenlight on all things Marvel Cinematic Universe, replied: “James, if Guardians does well you’ll be able to do whatever you want.” Guardians of the Galaxy–with almost $100 million on opening weekend–has done, to say the least, “well.” Thunderbolts shall follow!
