After 23 years climbing the corporate ladder of the publishing world (she left when she reached the top, as VP, Publisher and Editorial Director at Fairchild Publications), Geri Brin launched her own business at the age of 51: FabOverFifty.com. It’s a website for female baby boomers who, like Brin, appreciate well-crafted stories, particularly those that feature stylish successful women over 50. Although the site is laden with targeted advertisements (anti-aging creams, plastic surgery), readers can find wonderful Q&As with “women of substance” like author Jeanne Ray who worked as a registered nurse for 40 years before she wrote her first novel (a bestseller!) at the age of 60. (Ms. Ray is the mother of author Ann Patchett, winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award for the novel Bel Canto.)
When not writing or editing, Brin is most likely trying to find a date for her son Colby. Seriously. In 2010, with the help of her son, she launched a spin-off site, DateMySingleKid.com. Although she says she didn’t launch the site specifically to find Colby a wife, she does admit to knitting lots of cashmere hoodies for babies she hasn’t yet met. Ms. Brin may be happy to know that we just checked at godaddy and hipgrandmas.com is available.
