Noticing an increase in home design ad pages in 2011 (+22%), New York magazine will launch a standalone shelter mag this spring. Named after design editor Wendy Goodman’s weekly newsletter, New York Design Hunting will have a circulation of 75,000. Half of those copies will be on newsstands for $6.99. The other half will be distributed for free.
According to the Coalition for the Homeless, the homeless population of New York rose to an all-time high in 2011. A reported 113,552 different people slept in the city’s emergency shelters last year, including over 40,000 children, marking an 8% increase from the previous year and a 37% increase since 2002. There was also a rise in the number of families relying on shelters, up 80% from 2002.
