Comedian and former U.S. Senator Al Franken has had a varied career. There isn’t a long list of people who have starred in a major motion picture (Stuart Saves HIs Family), interviewed NBA legend Michael Jordan, and been elected to national public office.
Not to mention having helped launch, as one of the original writers, arguably the most successful and longest-running TV comedy show in history, Saturday Night Live.
But Franken’s path, which has taken him beyond his dreams, would not have been possible without Tom Davis, his best friend from high school who later became the godfather to his daughter. In between, the two men helped influence the culture from their broadcast perch at the world famous 30 Rock.
That’s why today, even 11 years after Davis died, Franken is still eulogizing his pal.
My old partner Tom Davis died 11 years ago today. We started together in high school and joined SNL at its start in 1975. Tom was godfather to my daughter, Thomasin Davis Franken, and was my best friend.

The former Senator tweeted: “My old partner Tom Davis died 11 years ago today. We started together in high school and joined SNL at its start in 1975. Tom was godfather to my daughter, Thomasin Davis Franken, and was my best friend.”
Franken also shared the moment of “sad honor” he had in eulogizing Davis in Congress not long after Davis passed.
Davis worked on 153 episodes of Saturday Night Live. He died in 2012 at the age of 59 after a 3-year battle with cancer.
