The Dateline episode “The Secret Keepers” investigates the 2017 death of Randy Baker, a 59-year-old man who was found dead in his Greeley, Colorado home. His family assumed his death was related to his ongoing health issues (a bad heart). He had complained about fatigue and had fallen asleep while driving five times before his death. His wife of 18 years, Kelly Baker, told the police about his deteriorating health but the coroner’s autopsy revealed he didn’t die of natural causes.

Randy Baker had $123,000 worth of life insurance policies and his wife Kelly was the beneficiary. She was accused to hiring her nephew, Kelly Raisley, to kill his uncle. Raisley pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and is serving life in prison. Raisley’s mother, Carol Baker (Randy’s sister), pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder after prosecutors said Carol Baker conspired with Randy’s wife Kelly to murder him. (She was sentenced to 30 years in prison.) At the sentencing, Carol Baker said she had been duped by her sister-in-law, who said Randy was abusive towards her.
Randy’s wife Kelly Baker was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. In May 2019 she was sentenced to life in prison. At her sentencing, Kelly Baker addressed the court and said: “I don’t understand quite what God is doing, but I know he has a plan.”
According to an arrest affidavit, Randy and Carol’s aunt Becky McAllister said: “We aren’t a bad family and this is just as bizarre to us as it is to anybody.” Dateline airs Mondays at 10 pm on NBC.
