On January 12, Democrat Julián Castro, a former San Antonio mayor and Barack Obama’s Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Secretary, announced he’s running for President of the United States in 2020. When the 44-year-old politician made his public announcement in West San Antonio, he spoke the words “I am a candidate for President of the United States of America” in both English and Spanish. He’s using the slogan “One Nation. One Destiny.”
When Castro left the podium, CBS News anchor Reena Ninan pointed out that she heard a Selena song being played at the event. The Texas-born singer (born Selena Quintanilla-Pérez) was a popular American singer known as the Queen of Tejano music. She was murdered at the age of 23 in 1995 (when Julián Castro was 20), and was portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in the 1997 biopic Selena.
During the CBS News coverage of Castro’s announcement, after a quick Q&A with Dallas Morning News’ Gromer Jeffers who was reporting from the event, Ninan kidded Jeffers that the next time she speaks with him, she’s going to ask him what his favorite Selena song is. “I have a feeling we’re going to hear a lot of Selena at his political rallies,” Ninan says. Grover agrees, “I think we will. It’ll be interesting – Selena in Iowa, at an Iowa rally. That might be kinda’ cool.” Castro is being featured on 60 Minutes, which airs Sundays at 7 pm on CBS.
