On the third round of America’s Got Talent Season 13 Judge Cuts, country singer Martina McBride is the guest judge. One of the singers she gets to see perform is 24-year-old singer/songwriter Noah Guthrie from South Carolina. Before his Judge Cuts performance, Simon Cowell asks Guthrie to remind everyone of his background. Guthrie talks about being on the musical TV show Glee and how weird the transition was for him when the show was cancelled. Guthrie’s song choice reflects his experience in the music industry. For his Judge Cuts performance, Guthrie sings The Allman Brothers Band song ‘Whipping Post.’ (“Sometimes I feel like I’m tied to the whipping post.”)

‘Whipping Post’ is known as one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time. The late Gregg Allman wrote the song in 1969 while he was on the verge of quitting music, before he joined his big brother Duane’s band. Gregg Allman later said about writing ‘Whipping Post’: “It came so fast. I didn’t even have a chance to get the paper out. That’s the way the good songs come—they just hit you like a ton of bricks.” That’s exactly how the judges will feel watching Guthrie’s rendition of the song, which receives a standing ovation. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
