Steph Curry has two NBA MVPs but no real nickname. Sure, he’s part of the “Splash Brothers” but that’s a moniker he shares with fellow sharpshooter Klay Thompson. But Curry’s given-name-only status may have changed after his Game 3 point eruption against Houston. In post-game commentary, Kenny “The Jet” Smith said: “I call Steph Curry like the old record (made) of Vinyl — once you get him in the groove of the game, you can’t get him out.” The Jet said to Shaquille “The Big Aristotle” O’Neal, “You’re a DJ, you understand.”

As nicknames go, “Vinyl” is pretty good for Steph. After all, Curry is very, very often in the groove. Note: NBA basketball runs deep with nicknames, from Doctor J and Magic to the Big O and The Answer to The Truth and The Human Highlight Film. (Kobe Bryant wanted a nickname so badly he just started calling himself “Black Mamba.”) Will Steph Curry’s “VINYL” last? Maybe if Shaq, the great bestower of nicknames, joins Kenny Smith in calling Curry Vinyl.
