Maddie Poppe is the 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Iowa who’s made it to the Top 3 on American Idol. (The other two are powerhouse singer Gabby Barrett and country singer Caleb Lee Hutchinson). All three are talented and unique, but Maddie might be the most unpredictable, especially when it comes to choosing songs. For her audition, she sang “The Rainbow Connection” from The Muppets movie. “My strategy, so far, has been to pick weird, quirky, unique songs that no one else wants to do that make me stand out,” says Maddie. The strategy is working!

The week before the finale, the American Idol contestants got to travel to Nashville and work with Idol superstar Carrie Underwood. “Maddie’s voice is even more hypnotic in person,” says Underwood. “Every week, Maddie is gaining some confidence in her own ability.”
Those are two solid clues as to why Maddie could win American Idol. (Plus, she uses the word “whilst” in Instagram posts; see below.) The winner will be announced on American Idol on Monday, May 21, during the two-hour finale beginning at 9pm on ABC.
