Michael J. Woodard is the 20-year-old bowling alley attendant from Los Angeles competing on American Idol. He is one of the most memorable singers who’ve made it to the Top 14. Every time he’s on stage, he surprises the judges – Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan – and the audience with his music selection and performances. For his audition he sang Ed Sheeran’s “Make It Rain.” He followed that up with “Maybe This Time” from the musical Caberet. What’s also memorable is Michael’s modest wardrobe. For “Maybe This Time,” Michael wore a bandana around his head and a loose khaki buttoned shirt and matching pants which looks like some sort of uniform.
For Michael’s All-Star Duet with Train lead singer Pat Monahan, Michael went with one color head-to-toe again — this time all black. See below. And for his Top 14 performance, Michael took it even further and wore a mechanic’s jumpsuit while singing the Sia song “Titanium” which drew a standing ovation from all three judges. (See photo above.)
Think there’s a reason behind Michael’s clothing selection? Michael says it is a look, even if maybe people are surprised it’s what he chooses for his big national TV appearances. In one Instagram post (included below), Michael says “Yes I really did look like this on tv. AND ITS STILL A LOOK IDC.” Is there a message there? Is it helping his chance to win? Tune in Monday, April 23 to find out if Michael advances to the Top 10. American Idol airs Sundays and Mondays at 8pm on ABC.
