In the series premiere of Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, the 1989 murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez in their Beverly Hills mansion is re-lived. Before their sons Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 of first-degree murder, the young men saw a psychiatrist, Dr. Jerome Oziel (played by Josh Charles), who was in a relationship with a woman named Judalon Smyth. After Oziel and Smyth broke up, Smyth became a key witness for the prosecution after she told authorities that she overhead the brothers confess to the killings. She later recanted and said Dr. Oziel brainwashed her.
