On Season 12 of America’s Got Talent, former Spice Girl and judge Mel B has made it clear –often — that she’s currently single. She mentions it, you know, a lot. After watching the all-male U.S. Air Force a cappella group In the Stairwell perform, Mel’s singlehood was mentioned. After watching a shirtless male dancer participate in an Oskar & Gaspar performance, Mel B went backstage to find the man and introduce herself. And when Chase Goehring sang one of his original songs about loving someone who didn’t fully love him back, Mel B said she could relate. So who was Mel B’s ex-husband?
[Stephen Belafonte was a producer on Thank You For Smoking]
For ten years, Mel B was married to Stephen Belafonte. He was born Stephen Stanbury in 1975 in Hollywood. After graduating from Loyola Marymount University, Stanbury changed his name to Belafonte and opened his own film production company, Remag, which has gone on to produce films including Thank You For Smoking (2005) which was based on the Christopher Buckley novel (see link above). Mel B and Belafonte married in 2007 in Las Vegas. They have one daughter together, Madison, 6. Mel B is also the mother of 10-year-old daughter Angel, whose father is movie star Eddie Murphy, and 18-year-old Phoenix Chi, who’s father is Mel’s ex-husband, former Spice Girls backup dancer Jimmy Gulzar. Mel B and Gulzar were married in 1998 and divorced in 2000. America’s Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8pm on NBC.
