Husband and wife Daniel and Stephanie Rensing are the entrepreneurs behind The Smart Baker. Their first product was The Cheat Sheet Apron, an apron with a conversion chart on the bottom (when lifted, it faces the cook/baker). The second product was a collapsible cupcake tower, and the third was pre-cut Perfect Parchment paper designed specifically for cake baking pans and cookie sheets. They had success building the Smart Baker online and then pitched the business on Shark Tank in 2012.
On Shark Tank, the Rensings made a deal with Barbara Corcoran — $75,000 in exchange for 40 percent equity and a 5 percent royalty. But after the show, the deal fell through. Stephanie returned to teaching while CEO Daniel continues to run the company today. And he’s doing an excellent job. Even without the Corcoran cash, The Smart Baker continues to deliver. The Perfect Parchment is now available at select Michaels Stores.
