Sen. John McCain is an old Cold Warrior and there’s no amount of looking into Vladimir Putin’s eyes that could make McCain see the soul of a good man. McCain just responded to what seems like a Russian about-face by President Donald Trump on Twitter. After declaring that “Crimea was TAKEN by Russia” during Obama’s tenure, Trump asked “was Obama too soft on Russia?” McCain basically responded with a Hell Yeah.
McCain has had his share of disagreements with Trump policy so far, but McCain took Trump’s tweet as an opportunity to forge cooperation against Russia. McCain wrote: “let’s take a different course together: give defensive lethal assistance to #Ukraine & keep sanctions on #Russia.” Specifically McCain means the sanctions imposed by Executive Order 13660 signed on March 6, 2014 and put in place to punish Russia for “violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, or for stealing the assets of the Ukrainian people,” according to the US State Department. Subsequent executive orders, still in place, have increased the scope of the original sanctions against Russia.
Yes, he was too soft – let’s take a different course together: give defensive lethal assistance to #Ukraine & keep sanctions on #Russia https://t.co/2Su2wIiyWs
