Popular and gregarious former Vice President Joe Biden will head up the road from Washington and Delaware to Philadelphia. Biden has been hired by the University of Pennsylvania to head up the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement — a new enterprise specializing in foreign affairs. UPenn, an Ivy League school with a rich history, made the announcement this week saying “in his distinguished career of service to our nation, [Joe Biden] has demonstrated a unique capacity to bring people together across divides and to craft constructive responses to some of the toughest and most important policy challenges of our day.”

Biden is a graduate of the University of Delaware and its law school. The University of Pennsylvania’s most famous alum at present just replaced Biden’s former boss in the White House. Donald Trump transferred to UPenn’s Wharton School of Business after two years at Hofstra University in New York. Trump graduated from Penn in 1968. In describing Biden’s “unique capacity to bring people together across divides and to craft constructive responses,” the university implicitly draws a distinction between the pugnacious style of President Trump and what it honors in a statesman.
