In October 2011, the body of 12-year-old Garrett Phillips was found in his Potsdam, New York home. He had been strangled to death. Nick Hillary, the ex-boyfriend of Garrett’s mother (Tandy Cyrus), became the prime suspect. He was charged with second-degree murder. This week, he was acquitted. Now Tandy Cyrus is speaking up. She is giving an exclusive interview to Elizabeth Vargas of ABC 20/20.

In its previews of the episode, 20/20 says that while Cyrus never saw Hillary hit or threaten to hit a child, she “has no doubt that Hillary killed” her son. Hillary has maintained his innocence from the beginning. Cyrus said: “I don’t know that there is a severe enough punishment. I hope he [Hillary] spends the rest of his life in prison. But he still gets to live.”ABC 20/20 will investigate the murder of Garrett Phillips and the trial of Nick Hillary on Friday, September 30 at 10pm.
