Dr. Anjali Ramkissoon‘s tirade against a Miami Uber driver, recorded on YouTube (below), is being shared around the Internet because it’s such a crazy example of horrible behavior. Anjali Ramkissoon is about to rank up there with the lion-killing dentist — as far as world condemnation. (She’s already removed her Instagram account.) But the other side of the sad story demands equal attention. The extraordinary patience and calm displayed by the anonymous Uber driver should be just as much a part of the coverage.
Turning the other cheek isn’t easy when one encounters the privileged rage of someone like Dr. Ramkissoon, yet the Uber driver never loses his cool. Indeed, he even seems to be trying to help this woman as she rants and rages, though he’s under no obligation to stand there and take it. “I’m a five foot girl who weighs 100 pounds… I’m getting really belligerent right now,” she screams, challenging the driver physically. By the time she climbs into his car, screaming obscenities, threatening the driver and throwing his possessions out the door, he could easily have snapped. But he didn’t. He never does. This is a huge win for Uber, whose drivers are a loose band of independent contractors that — not being employees — aren’t compelled to act this well. Here’s a salute to this Uber driver. Expect Uber to reward him. The company has suspended Dr. Ramkissoon’s account.
