Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is trying a new tactic to draw some media attention — any media attention — away from the candidacy of Donald J. Trump. Huckabee is willing to go to jail for it. It’s a place Donald Trump won’t go for two reasons. One, he’s busy flying in his jet and talking about deportation and sticking his poke stick into Jeb Bush’s soft rear end. Two, Huckabee is going to jail to visit Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk who defied a Supreme Court ruling and refused to issue gay marriage licences.
Huckabee says Davis is merely exercising “religious liberty” — or #ReligiousLiberty — and it shouldn’t be a crime. Davis’s critics say she failed to do her job and defied the law of the land — noting that exercising religious liberty, and ignoring laws in doing so, is the rationale behind much contemporary terrorism around the world. Trump is one of those critics who say the “law of the land” takes priority. “The decision’s been made,” Trump says.
