Serena Williams of all people could be forgiven for thinking that the body was stronger than the mind. After all, Serena possesses one of the strongest bodies in sports history — so strong she says that for years she’s refrained from lifting weights so as to not get too muscular. But this week as she approaches the US Open, the record-shattering Williams is sharing the key ingredient to her success. Determination and strategy live in the mind, which is even more important than physical strength. Champions are made between the ears, as Serena knows better than anyone. As she told Robin Roberts during a promotional visit to JP Morgan “the mind is the strongest thing we have. Plant seeds of confidence.”
That last bit — the instructive “plant seeds” helps explain Williams’s description of herself on Twitter. Her mantra there is “Living, Loving, and working to help you.” Two things for her, and one for us. Williams is transitioning from champion to guru, while still in the hunt, still on the mountain top, leading by example.
