Walter De Gregorio had the unhappy job of facing the media immediately following the roundup and arrest of multiple FIFA officials on corruption charges. De Gregorio, a seasoned pro, did the best he could with the info he had. Now he’s quit FIFA. Or as a FIFA statement described it, De Gregorio “decided to relinquish his office with immediate effect.” (That’s kind of what FIFA chief Sepp Blatter did last week, after being re-elected in the midst of the corruption scandal — Blatter “relinquished” his gig!)
But the real reason De Gregorio is no longer a FIFA man is probably because of a hilarious joke he made on Swiss television. Roving sports correspondent James Corbett thinks De Gregorio got fired for it. Here’s what De Gregorio said:
FIFA president Sepp Blatter, the media director, and the general secretary are sitting in a car, who is driving?
The police!
