Sabaoon in Urdu means “the first ray of light from the dawn.” It is the name of a school in Pakistan that is rehabilitating child militants who were formerly recruited by the Pakistani Taliban (TTP). Some of the children were trained as suicide bombers.
The psychologists, social workers and military advisers at Sabaoon are dedicated to preventing recidivism. The students — boys captured by the army of police in raids on PTT training camps — can spend anywhere from six months to two years at Sabaoon. The greatest obstacles that face the children are when they leave the facility. 60 Minutes’ Lara Logan will report on the recruitment of child suicide bombers in Pakistan and Afghanistan on May 17, 7pm on CBS.
