The most famous movie ever made about presidential politics, All The President’s Men, thrust the mysterious character Deep Throat into the national consciousness. Deep Throat’s must salient piece of advice? “Follow the money.” Investigative types have been taking his advice ever since. The latest entry in the tried and (sometimes) true method is Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich, the new book by Peter Schweizer.
Clinton Cash may not “shock” people as Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul suggests, but the book–due May 5–should make Hillary Clinton’s State Department email problems look small by comparison. Schweizer attempts to tie generous financial gifts to the Clintons and their foundation to favorable policy decisions. (The book focuses on foreign payments.) Schweizer presents a lot of juicy coincidence–and proving causation is hard to do. But proof may not be the bar: speculation and suspicion will be enough for some. Clinton Cash will certainly be a weapon against Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, and she’ll need to spend time and resources fighting it. Clinton will try to label the charges of cash for consideration as mere innuen-dough. Republicans will ask people to again consider Deep Throat’s advice–even though he screwed them the first time around.
