Superb nature photographer Martin Le-May captured this extraordinary photo of a weasel attacking a flying green woodpecker in mid-air. It may look like they’re just having fun, but it’s a battle for survival. Expect an illustrated children’s book–The Weasel and The Woodpecker–inspired by this story to appear in no time.
The woodpecker survived the attack and the weasel scampered away according to Business Insider, which interviewed Le-May. (In the book, we suspect they’ll end up friends.) Birder Jason Ward first brought the pic to the world’s attention:
