On February 9, numerous people were found dead inside a mobile home in New Port Richey, Florida. An investigation is ongoing. The sleepy New Port Richey is an unlikely place for a mass murder. A suburb of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater area of Florida, it used to be called Orange Lake, but when a separate post office was established in 1915 to serve the growing population in the southern part of Port Richey, the New Port Richey name stuck. The town hoped to become a winter home for Hollywood stars in the 1920s but the Great Depression put an end to that.
Today New Port Richey is a town of just 14,903 people where the median income for a family is $41,172. The town has four high schools and a campus of Pasco-Hernando State College. The largest employer is a non-profit hospital, North Bay Hospital.
