Oscar-winner Emma Thompson and her actor husband Greg Wise will refuse to pay taxes until people implicated in the HSBC banking scandal go to jail. “I have actively loved paying tax, because I am a profound f–king socialist and I believe we are all in it together,” Wise told the Evening Standard. But we’re not. Wise said he won’t be “paying a penny more” in taxes until the “evil bastards go to prison.”
He said his wife was with him on the protest. “Em’s on board. She agrees. We’re going to get a load of us together. A movement. They can’t send everyone to prison. But we’ll go to prison if necessary,” Wise said. The UK government has failed to act aggressively after it was uncovered that HSBC was helping its wealthy UK clients hide money in Swiss accounts to avoid taxes. HSBC has apologized, but no punishments have been handed down. The exposure of HSBC’s secret money laundering practice drove large protests in London.
