Demi Lovato is only 22. And that’s just the point–she’s closer to the many teens who need this message than most other advocates for mental health awareness. A former child star on Disney and the popular singer of hits like “Let It Go” and “Give Your Heart a Break,” Lovato has courageously broadcast her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She could have hidden it–the diagnosis was private, after all–but the young star instead became an advocate for mental health.
CNN recently named nine “mental wellness warriors” and Lovato, the youngest, topped the list. “I want to show the world that there is life — surprising, wonderful and unexpected life — after diagnosis,” Lovato has said. She used to turn to drugs and alcohol, but since receiving her diagnosis she feels more in control.
