The memorable, elegant ESPN sports broadcaster Stuart Scott has died. He was 49 and had been battling cancer since 2007. During the summer of 2014 Scott had four separate surgeries in seven days to combat liver complication and kidney failure. He still managed to give an inspiring address about his battle at the 2014 ESPYs. Scott worked at ESPN for 21 years.
He also fought back hard against rumors that he had given in, taking to Twitter to reply to the rumors: “Rumor bout me in hospice. Not True. Airball. Swing & a miss.” He lost his battle but did not surrender, did not go gentle into that good night. Stuart Scott leaves behind two daughters–and a nation of sports fans who will miss his calm, clarity, precision and comforting voice. No one will be able to say, quite like Scott did, that a competitor is “as cool as the other side of the pillow.”
