Prince’s Hot Chicken, a true joint on Nashville’s north side is where Nashville’s famous “hot chicken” was born. (Even if it used to be called Barbecue Chicken Shack–this is hot chicken’s DNA trail.) Seriouseats recounts the legend that around 70 years ago, a young husband came home late yet again and his wife aimed to fix his wandering eye (and more) by slamming him with some vicious spice in his chicken. Thing is, he liked it.
No word on whether the lava-like recipe ever cured Andre Prince’s adulterous ways, but the spiteful spice did launch the hot chicken trend that’s all over Nashville today. And beyond. You’ve never seen a piece of white bread have so much fun. (“The bread soaks up the hot chicken’s juices, becoming just another delivery system for the heat,” writes Susannah Felts.) Give the place a call when you’re in town. (615) 226-9442.
