Facing a barrage of expert doubt about whether the FBI jumped the gun in accusing North Korea of executing the Sony hack, FBI Director James Comey reasserted the claim today. He knows because the hackers “got sloppy” and revealed their IP addresses. (IP stands for internet protocol–every device communicating over the Internet has an IP number associated with it.) Hackers usually hide their IP address–that’s Hacking 101. But Comey suspects they may have been distracted by James Franco and simply forgot to cover their tracks. (Note: Comey didn’t mention Franco specifically! But the actor is distracting.)
As for the doubters like the well-respected cyber security firm Norse, Comey said they didn’t have the information he has. Comey implied that if the experts had seen what he’s seen, they’d draw the same conclusion: North Korea was the culprit.
