The enigmatic avocado always tops the good, high-fat food lists. Avocados scream healthy California living, yet they’re loaded with fat. This delicious counter-intuitive fruit is about 75% fat by calories, making it fattier than your average burger. But avocados get the health food nod anyway because they contain mostly the good kind of fat (as in olive oil) and because avocados are rich in potassium and fiber. But the second best fatty food? That’ll surprise you. It’s cheese.
Cheese rarely makes anybody’s list of healthy foods. Yet cheese is a terrific source of calcium, vitamin B12, selenium (an antioxidant), phosphorus and other nutrients. Cheese is an excellent protein delivery system all by itself. It’s also good for your teeth–it can help neutralized acid build-up. Cheese also contains fatty acids that may even help reduce the risk of some types of diabetes.
