Bernie Madoff, the former financial advisor who swindled millions from thousands of investors in his infamous Ponzi scheme, has written a series of emails to NBC News, from jail. The 76-year-old is serving his 150 year sentence in a federal prison.
In the emails he writes about how difficult it has been for him to “live with the pain I have inflicted on so many” but “there is nothing to compare with the degree of pain I endure with the loss of my son’s [sic] Mark and Andy.” Mark killed himself in 2010; Andrew died in 2014 of lymphoma. Bernie Madoff understands why they didn’t forgive him. He wrote: “The fact that I was trying to protect our family by sheltering them from any knowledge or involvement in my wrongdoing still fails to allow me to forgive myself.”
