At the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Russian president Vladimir Putin was seen placing a blanket around the shoulders of Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan. The gesture might seem harmless to Americans but in China it became a mini-scandal. Chinese news sites are pulling the video off their sites and censors are taking it down from social media sites. What they fear is not clear.
As The Atlantic points out, the First Lady kept Putin’s shawl on for about four seconds until someone behind her slipped it off and gave her her own coat.
