The enemy of my enemy is my friend, the old saying goes. It’s a truism that has governed geopolitics for a long time. President Obama has taken it to heart recently, according to the Wall Street Journal. Obama allegedly sent a secret letter to the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini last month hoping to push Iran to meet deadlines on its nuclear program and also to outline the importance of battling ISIS in the region.
Obama said during his first campaign that he would forego current diplomatic protocol and reach out to speak directly with leaders of countries like Iran, which is not an ally. He began doing so even before he was elected.
