The idea of cats sipping on warm mugs of coffee and pawing their iPads while sprawled out on chaises is awesome–but that’s not exactly what a cat café is. A cat café is a well-designed, friendly place where people can hang out with a cup of joe and also hang out with cats. The local Humane Society provides the cats to the café who are available for adoption.
The nation’s first cat café, Cat Town Café, opened recently in Oakland. It’ so popular that potential cat owners needs reservations to get in on the weekend. Now our nation’s capital will welcome Crumbs and Whiskers in fall 2015. A Kickstarter campaign will launch in January. The founder and owner of Crumbs and Whiskers, University of Maryland graduate Kanchan Singh, says: “If the Kickstarter goes well, we will essentially open a bigger and better cat cafe. If not, we’ll still open a basic cafe. It might be lacking a super amazing atmosphere and fancy cat furniture/play areas, but Crumbs and Whiskers is opening regardless.” She said to make it work, the café might have to charge an entry fee of $5 or $7.
