$26 million. That’s what the home of late actress Lauren Bacall is expected to fetch. The apartment, located in the magnificent and snooty Dakota building on Manhattan’s West Side, is a masterpiece of decadent living with over 100 feet of park-facing “frontage” (as they say) and SEVEN fireplaces. The Dakota is home to all sorts of fabulous people. It’s probably most famous for being the building outside of which John Lennon was gunned down. Yoko Ono still lives there.
The only problem you’ll face–that is, if you happen to be good for the $26 million–is the co-op board. Just because you can afford it and you want to live at the Dakota doesn’t mean the Dakota wants you. The neighbors are persnickety and hard to understand. (Look, it’s not like John Lennon was well-behaved–or quiet!) But the Dakota turned down everyone from Melanie Griffith to hedge fund honchos.
