Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist, director of research at DAMTP, University of Cambridge, and author of A Brief History of Time, has joined Facebook. He wrote: “Our connections to one another have grown infinitely and now that I have the chance, I’m eager to share this journey with you.” That’s nice but some pessimists are quick to assume that the creation of his Facebook page is really “a marketing move” for the upcoming Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything.
Even if it is, his fans don’t care. Within six hours of announcing Hawking’s presence on Facebook, nearly 1 million people started to follow him. (Note: posts from Prof. Hawking are signed as “SH”.) Why wouldn’t you follow a man who in spite of being wheelchair bound and dependent on a computerised voice system “still hopes to make it into space one day”?
